New battery can charge in mere seconds

March 12, 2009

One day a person may only need seconds to fully charge up his notebook before running off to work or class.

According to Nature, Byoungwoo Kang and Gerbrand Ceder, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, discovered a way for a lithium compound to release and hold lithium ions in seconds.

Lithium iron phosphate has a crystal structure that creates tunnels for lithium ions to travel through while recharging a lithium battery. The researchers used lithium phosphate glass to coat a cathode, which allowed the battery to charge and discharge within 9 seconds.

Looks like the days of dead batteries are about to be numbered. :-D
